Photographing wildlife in the great outdoors can always be challenging. The British weather, for a start, can be very changeable, and winter snow throws even more difficulty into the mix. Then there’s finding your subject in the first place, or even getting close enough to obtain detailed images. There’s no question that fieldcraft is one, if not the most, important skill when it comes to wildlife photography, and photographing mountain hares is no exception. The best place to find these incredibly stunning animals is high in the mountains of Scotland, usually out in the sticks, away from people. You could easily think then that they would be a very tricky subject to get close to due to the locations. While this is partly correct, with the right approach, and using certain fieldcraft techniques, you should be able to spend many hours within reach of these ‘snow bunnies’, photographing them as they go about their daily lives.
