Last summer I had one of the best photographic and wildlife experiences of my life. I made my first trip to Machias Seal Island, a small rocky island off the coast of Maine, to photograph nesting Atlantic Puffins. The trip started off with a 12 hour drive from my home to the small picturesque town of Cutler Harbor, Maine. While waiting for the boat to arrive to take us to the island, we were treated with the sight of a bald eagle fishing near the marina. Once onboard the boat it was a short one hour ride out to the island that also offered views of the beautiful rocky Maine coastline and a lighthouse as well. It became apparent we were getting near the island as we started to see many seabirds flying by us or floating atop the sea. I was very anxious to arrive but also incredibly nervous because there is always the risk that they won’t be able to dock the boat on the island if the water is too rough. The coast line is very rocky making it difficult to land at times.
