While on a whale-watching boat tour in Monterey Bay during fall migration, I photographed this humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) as the whale breeched out of the water to land on its back with a splash.
Humpback whales breech to help get rid of parasites which cause itching and irritation to their skin. on this particular cloudy morning, we were treated with many breaches by this humpback whale and many other humpbacks.
