This Osprey just caught a fresh fish in the Gulf for a quick lunch. I hope it shares a little of the fish with its family.
Ospreys are not very fussy when it comes to their diets, they will feed on any fish, but it has to be within a striking range of 3 feet from the surface of the water. If their targets are slow-moving, surface feeders like Herrings, which form in large schools, bottom-feeding fish such as Carp, Flounder, Perch, and fish that dwell in shallow waters.
It also depends on what is available during a particular season which fish is available. For example, in the Great Lakes region, their diet consists mainly of Bullhead, Bass, Blue Gill, and Perch. Besides fish, Ospreys prey on other animals such as small birds, turtles, rodents, frogs, Crustaceans, and even small Alligators.
