Hi, I am a Laughing Gull. I live on the Island of Sanibel in Florida, and all along the East and Southern coasts of the United States. You will see us flying about in the Gulf of Mexico, just searching for something yummy to eat. We are such great acrobats in the sky making seemingly impossible the antics we do, appearing effortless and unbelievable.
We can float motionless in midair somehow catching the wind currents in perfect timing by landing our bodies in a sitting position in the water. We are so good at getting our food from the water while we are airborne by either skimming the surface or diving in the water. It does not matter how we get the food, even food tossed by humans. You will see the us hovering over the head of a Pelican that just dove in the water for a fish.
We are hoping for the yummy fish to somehow slip out of the Pelican’s bill. We are normally diurnal or active during the day, but during the breeding season we will forage at night. We will look for food along the beach but will also hover to catch insects around lights. We eat a variety of prey and will both hunt and scavenge for suitable food and even enjoy human garbage. We build our nests on the ground and in big colonies with other gulls and terns. If you ever come across us, take the time and see how we do these unbelievable acrobats in the sky as though we are entertaining YOU at a CIRCUS!
