A Southern Ground Hornbill, with his formidable beak full of frogs, makes his way back to the family through the grass. We had a lot of rain the night before and our Maasai guide knew this would mean good frog hunting conditions for the Hornbills, so we went looking for them.
There are a host of cultural beliefs that plaque this bird that have led to its persecution and poisoning in parts of southern Africa. Because of this, and habitat loss, it is currently listed as endangered in South Africa. Several organizations are working on ways to slow and reverse the decline of this iconic bird.
