Hi, I am a Moorhen chick. I am a small sized bird that is found near water such as ponds, streams and marshes. You can recognize me very quickly by my black feathered body and my cool red, pointed beak. There are seven different Moorhens that are found all over the world. They are found in Australia, Africa, South America, but no way will you find us in the tropical rainforests, or polar regions.
We love the water, and we have these cool webbed toes that helps us to be good swimmers and can walk on any slippery areas and not fall. You will find us in groups of Moorhens that are called Flocks. We are Omnivorous birds and that means are diet is of insects, water spiders, and small invertebrates. Sometimes you may see us eating small rodents, lizards, fruits, seeds, and larger animals. We do have many predators that love to eat us such as dogs, foxes, coyotes, raccoons, dingos, reptiles and wildcats are some examples.
You may see photos of my little Chick. Our females begin to build a nest by themselves on the ground where they lay an average of 7 eggs in the spring. Both parents help incubate the eggs for a few weeks and both feed the chicks. Please take care of our environment which is yours too, because of the pollution, and garbage that you throw in the waters around us. You also have been destroying our habitats by building homes for yourselves and we end up homeless. If you see us one day, please pick up any garbage around where we live which will help us live healthy and happy…. Thank you.
