Hi, I am a wading bird that loves to walk in the shallow part of the water, and on the shore too. I am an Ibis. There are about 28 different species of me found around the world. Our favorite place to hang out is the Southern Hemisphere. We inhabit areas by lakes, rivers, forests, marshy mountain meadows, swamps and marshes.
From the many places we inhabit, it will be very easy to find us. Many of us are being threatened because of the pollution of the water and habitat destruction. You can find me in different colors such as white, brown, black, gray, orange-red and pink. Our color is determined by what we eat. Our face and throat does not have any feathers and during breeding season our patches of bare skin will be a very deep red. You can see I have a very down curved, pointed bill, round body, long legs and partially webbed feet.
I am diurnal very active during the day and at night I am in a tree snoring away. Having the bill I have makes it easy to dig in the mud looking fir food to eat. My diet consists of frogs, fish, crabs, worms, bugs, reptiles and small mammals. Humans love because I eat lots of insects that are pests in agricultural fields or gardens. I have to be very carefully I could be eaten by hungry snakes, large birds of prey, foxes, and other predatory animals.
A female can lay up to 3 eggs in a nest in a tree, cliff or bushes. Both parents take part in the incubation of the eggs which takes about 39 days. The hatchlings are covered with feathers and they are born with a straight bill. They stay with their parents until they can learn to be on their own. One day you might just see me wadding in the water or walking on the shore. If you stop and want to take a photo of me, do it quickly because I get scared very easily.
