Hi, I am a Woodpecker and the largest one in North America. I am called a Pileated Woodpecker. You can find me in northern and Central United States, and Southern Canada in woodland areas. I love living in solitary deep in the woods, but lately I had to adapt to living in areas where younger trees are growing because people have been building in the areas I love to live.
I am about the size of a Crow, and I am black with a red crest on me. All Woodpeckers, including myself are AWESOME tree climbers, because we have sharp claws, stiff tail feathers, and two backward facing toes. If you look closely you might even see bristles on my nostrils preventing me from inhaling wood particles when I am chipping away on a tree looking for bugs. If you ever spot me, stop and watch me doing a certain move which is sort of a spiral motion around the tree looking for those fat, juicy, yummy bugs.
I can peck about 20 times per second and it will produce 10,000 to 12,000 pecks per day on trees. My diet consists of flies, ants, mosquitoes, grubs, moths and even seeds, acorns, and walnuts. You can see I have this very pointed bill to help me chisel into the wood of trees, trying to find the bugs that just might be hiding from me. Do not worry all this hammering does not hurt my brain because it is cushioned inside my strong skull so it is not getting hurt as I drill away into the trees. I hope one day you see me, hear me chipping away at a tree or maybe you can even see my unique flying pattern. Hope to see you soon!.
