Hi, I am a Colobus Monkey and I live in the rain forests of central and eastern Africa but many may see me hanging around at the zoo. At the zoo you might see me eating a special primate biscuit along with vegetables and bananas. Many times you may see us even eat leaves, flowers and twigs.
We can eat a big mouthful of food because we have well developed molars that grind plant matter, into a pulp. I have a three chambered stomach that then takes over fermenting what food I am eating and breaking down the tough cellulose into great energy. Because of the time to process my stomach contents I am hardly active, and when I am not eating, I am digesting my food. I am black with a white fur bordering my face and trailing my back and rump.
I have very thick, and long hair, with a cap like trim that looks like I am wearing a hat. My long tail is 2 feet long with a very fluffy tip that is the color of white. If you ever come to visit me check out my long fingers, and no thumbs. When I do need to jump from branch to branch I use my four full sized fingers to form a hook that helps me grasp for a branch. We are great leapers and when any predators threaten me, I hide in the underbrush or sometimes I hide way up high in trees. I do spend lots of time sleeping or just enjoying the sunny day. You will see me dangling from a tree with my long tail. People love me because I facilitate helping trees grow, and I do rely on trees for food and shelter. I can’t wait to meet you, and don’t forget to say HELLO!
