HI, I am a small bird of the family called Tochilidae. This family is very huge, it has 326 species of us, with many of us being a Hummingbird. This family is the 2nd largest bird family in the world. We are among the smallest birds measuring three to five inches. Another Hummingbird which is the smallest living bird species, is our cute Bee Hummingbird. It’s about 2 to 5 cm. We sure love helping our pretty flowers pollinate, along with other insects.
We love the yummy taste of nectar, like our friends the butterflies, and bees. Our sense of smell is not too good, but we are attracted to color, especially our favorite color of red. We will hover over flowers as we enjoy drinking the nectar from the flower. While we are doing this we will flap our wings very quickly to stay in one place. Many humans say when they see us do this its like a blur and we are beating so fast its sounds like a humming sound. This is how we got our name. You also have said you have seen us put our whole head in to the flower to get every drop.
If you ever see us doing that you will notice our head is covered with a yellow pollen, and when we move to another flower we can pollinate it. Sometime we can even pollinate with our beak too. We are so clever like some bees that we can actually assess the amount of sugar in the nectar we eat, and we will not go to the flowers that have less sugar that we are used too. You should do some reading and find out if us Hummingbirds can live in your city. If we can live in your city, then get yourself a Hummingbird feeder, and I just might come and say hello.
