The Indian Pitta (Pitta brachyura) framed by its habitat. This colourful bird is locally known as "Navrang", meaning "nine-colours" due to its extravagant plumage.
The best place to catch a glimpse of this magnificent bird is the forest behind the Panchalingeswar temple, situated on a hillock near the Nilgiri hills and about 30 kms south west of the city, Balasore. The forest is also home to many other wonderful birds, elephants and the South Indian Rock Agama lizards.
