This photograph was taken near the Oschiena di Crova farmhouse (Vercelli) in Italy, Piedmont region. It is an area very popular with photographers and now also known internationally for birdwatchers. The species in question is Spatula querquedula, the garganey duck is a "surface" duck, as it only submerges its head to feed and avoids going underwater completely. It has dimensions slightly larger than that of the Teal, and is easily recognizable by the color of the plumage. The photograph was taken with a Nikon D3000 and fixed lens 500mm neever lens.
