Early one morning in January, we hiked into the Soda Butte Drainage area in Yellowstone National Park looking for moose to photograph. The snow was calf deep and the temperature was -15F. We could hear the bulls sparing before we could see them. We came upon a group of eight moose, four bulls , 3 cows and a calf. We stayed a safe distance away and watched and photographed the group as they browsed in the willows. The bulls would occasionally interrupt their feeding to spar with one another.
