In early August a few years ago, my brother, Michael and I were lucky enough to be able to photograph a family of Osprey thanks to our friends, who kindly let us cut through their property to get a rare — for us — close-up view (with our telephoto lenses) of the juvenile Ospreys in their gigantic nest situated in Ganges harbour (located in our central village here on Salt Spring Island) surrounded by great fishing ground.
We had visited the nest earlier in July and by the time I captured this portrait of one of the two siblings, the fledglings (with their amber eyes) had lost most of their downy feathers, grown considerably and were hop-flying on the edge of the nest, testing out their wings. I love this shot because you’d never guess that this young Osprey was not a confident diver-fisherman yet, like his Dad, with that intense glare of his, daring you to challenge him.
